The Global Warm Mix Asphalt Workshop will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 30 and 31 at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville.

The workshop assembles government employees, contractors, and manufacturers to discuss past and future warm mix asphalt (WMA) technologies. Some states have adopted warm mix asphalt technologies more actively than others. The state of Iowa has been on the leading edge of applying state-of-the art technologies.

The theme of the workshop centers on the paradigm shift on warm, not hot, mix asphalt that would re-define, certify, and revitalize WMA. Over a decade, warm mix asphalt has enjoyed a tremendous growth in the U.S. and the world. However, a significant reduction in temperature of asphalt mixtures has not been realized.

The workshop serves as a platform to share pros and cons of the technologies with a focus on field application and performance, according to Hosin “David” Lee, University of Iowa professor of civil and environmental engineering and chair of the workshop.

The workshop will include welcome remarks by Milt Dakovich, a member of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa; Alec Scranton, UI Foundation Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and dean of the College of Engineering; and Byung-Suk Kim, vice president of the Korea Institute of Construction Technology.

Keynote presentations will be delivered by Petur Petursson, Icelandic delegate in CEN/TC227/WG1; Matthew Corrigan, asphalt pavement engineer, Federal Highway Administration; and Randy West, director, National Center for Asphalt Technology.

Luncheon speakers include C. Allan Guymon, Sharon K. Tinker Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and co-director of the UI Photopolymerizations Center, and Karim Abdel-Malek, professor of biomedical engineering and director of the UI Center for Computer-Aided Design.

In addition to the UI, co-sponsors of the workshop are the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa, Korea Institute of Construction Technology, LL Pelling Co., Akzo Nobel, InVia Pavement Technologies, Sonneborn Refined Products, Kumho Petrochemical, and Maxam Equipment, Inc.

In conjunction with the workshop, the UI has established a Laboratory for Advanced Construction Technology (LACT) with support from Korea Institute of Construction Technology, Asphalt Paving Association in Iowa, and other private companies. The main purpose of lab is to help member institutes and companies develop and implement their innovative new construction technologies in practice by performing objective laboratory testing and field evaluation.
