The University of Iowa School of Music will present a performance by the UI Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of William LaRue Jones, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

The performance, featuring world-renowned violinist Kyle Dillingham, is free and the public is welcome. For those unable to attend, a live stream can be accessed at www.ustream.tv/channel/hawknet-special-events.

The program will feature:

  • Rienzi, WWV 49: Overture by Richard Wagner
  • Mathis der Maler (Symphony) by Paul Hindemith
  • Starry Night by Michael Cash
  • Tone Poem for Violin and Orchestra by Wiley Post (featuring Dillingham on violin)
  • Orange Blossom Special by Ervin T. Rouse; arr. Kyle Dillingham (featuring Dillingham on violin)

Since 1997, Jones has been professor of music and director of orchestral studies and conductor of orchestras and opera at the UI. In 2011 he received the distinct honor of becoming a Collegiate Fellow in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

His conducting schedule includes a wide array of professional, festival, collegiate, and student ensembles throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, ranging from the Minnesota Orchestra and the Minneapolis Pops to the Penang (Malaysia) Symphony, the Orquestra Sinfonica do Theatro da Paz (Belem, Brazil), the Antofagasta (Chile) Symphony, and the Symphony Orchestra of Lucerne (Switzerland).

Dillingham heads the band Horseshoe Road and has performed in more than 25 countries. The Enid, Okla., native picked up the violin when he was 9, and eight years later, he gave two featured performances at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

Named Oklahoma’s Musical Ambassador by Governor Henry, Dillingham has helped develop more than 30 relationships between universities in Oklahoma and overseas universities, and has also performed in more than 50 schools in Oklahoma. He was a featured performer for the King of Malaysia, the Princess of Thailand, and Singapore’s National Day Celebration. He has also performed with Roy Clark and Hank Thompson.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
