The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present Martha Redbone Roots Project on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 and 9:30 p.m. at The Mill in downtown Iowa City. Redbone is a rising star in the indie-roots music world, captivating audiences with her heartfelt Americana melodies.

Redbone is a musician of part Cherokee, Choctaw, and African-American descent. Her music is a mix of rhythm and blues, and soul music influences, fused with elements of traditional Native American music. Her most recent album blends the words of poet William Blake with the music of Appalachia to create spirited and haunting songs. The album draws on her childhood years spent in Kentucky, highlighting her rich musical and cultural influences.

Her unique approach of combining her Native American heritage with many traditional music genres has created a modern sound that resonates with a range of music lovers. Redbone is also actively involved in education and advocacy, particularly involved in Native American rights. She holds annual Native American music workshops for students and speaks at many reservations around the country. Redbone serves as the creative advisor to an organization working to eradicate violence against women and girls, in addition to working with several other world aid organizations.

Martha Redbone Roots Project will be in Iowa City for a week, working with a variety of departments across campus. Her week will kick off with a free performance at the UI Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival in Hubbard Park on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. Read more about the festival here.

Tickets for the Club Hancher performances are $20 for nonstudents and $10 for college students and youth from the Hancher Box Office.
