The University of Iowa School of Music will present War and Patriotic Songs, a performance by professor Katherine Eberle and students from her studio, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall.

The concert, which will feature Jason Sifford on piano, is free and open to the public.

Eberle says about the concert’s theme, “Many songs have been written about war and its impact, and so I have chosen songs to highlight the abilities of my students and to help them learn about how history and music have merged to convey the human condition in this concert for voice and piano.” A slide show of war photos from the Library of Congress Digital Collection will be displayed during the performance.

Songs on the program include “The Battle Cry of Freedom” by George Frederick Root; “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier,” an American Revolutionary song arranged by Richard Walters; and “Turn, Turn, Turn!,” written by Pete Seeger and popularized by the Byrds. An audience sing-along portion will feature “God Bless America” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

Eberle has given more than 100 solo recitals as a guest artist in 18 states and in countries including Brazil, Canada, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Russia. She made her New York debut at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall in 1994.

She was an artistic ambassador for the United States Information Agency doing solo concert tours in South America (in 1995 she appeared in Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Trinidad, and Tobago) and in Korea in 1997. A Van Lawrence Fellowship Winner from the Voice Foundation, Eberle was a 2012 Obermann Fellow in Residence for her research in Women Composers.

Eberle earned degrees from the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory (BME), the University of Cincinnati (MM), and the University of Michigan (DMA). She has taught at the University of Iowa since 1991.
