The University of Iowa Police received a report of an assault that occurred about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 25.

A woman was walking home alone in the area of Byington Road and Melrose Avenue when a man appeared in front of her and blocked her way on the sidewalk. The man shoved her to the ground and got on top of her, but she was able to fight him off.

The woman sustained minor injuries but did not seek medical attention at the time. She was unable to provide a description of her attacker other than that he was male.

Anyone with information about this incident should call the UI Police at 319-355-5022 or Iowa City Crimestoppers at 319-358-TIPS. Callers to Crimestoppers with information leading to a conviction may be eligible for a reward.

UI Police recommend people walk in groups as much as possible and report crimes immediately by calling 911. They also encourage the use of NITE Ride, Cambus, or other reliable transportation services. The UI Police offers Rape Aggression Defense training, which is self-defense training for women.
