The University of Iowa’s Hancher will continue to connect artists and audiences during the organization’s 2013-14 season. The lineup includes dance, theater, music, and family events performed by artists from around the world. Tickets for the entire season—including $10 tickets for youth and college students—are available now from the Hancher Box Office.
The season features a number of marquee events including the Friday, Sept. 13 performance of blues legend Buddy Guy. Guy’s performance, which will be free and outdoors in downtown Iowa City, is part of the inaugural Iowa Soul Festival and is a collaboration with Summer of the Arts. The bluesman’s young protégé Quinn Sullivan will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. with Guy’s performance scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
Other marquee events include comedian Lily Tomlin On Nov. 16; “Big Band Holiday” performances by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra featuring Wynton Marsalis and vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant on Dec. 7; a cappella group Naturally 7 on Feb. 7; and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre on March 19 in collaboration with Paramount Presents.
The season’s dance offerings also include Ragamala Dance performing Sacred Earth on March 6-7 and Gallim Dance, featuring the visceral choreography of Andrea Miller, on April 24-25. Theater presentations will include Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra performing No Place to Go, a satirical musical about modern working life, in a Club Hancher presentation at The Mill January 31 and February 1; Spencers – Theatre of Illusion of Feb. 16; and Iowa City’s Working Group Theatre performing Out of Bounds, a new work commissioned by Hancher and written by Jennifer Fawcett and the members of Working Group, May 1-4. The play will focus on issues of bullying and will be built from local interviews conducted by the company.
Jazz, roots, and world music are all part of the season, as well, including the Martha Redbone Roots Project on Oct. 3 and jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon on Nov. 8, both of which are Club Hancher performances. The husband and wife fiddling masters Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy will perform on Nov. 12 and Sones de México, a band committed to sharing traditional music from throughout Mexico, performs on April 11.
Classical music performances include the Jerusalem Quartet, performing music by Mozart, Shostakovich, and Dvorak, on Oct. 10; the Jupiter String Quaret, performing music by Beethoven and Hindemith as well as Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden, on Feb. 28 in a concert present in collaboration with the University of Iowa String Quartet Residency Program; and the Dublin Guitar Quartet, an ensemble committed to contemporary guitar music, on March 29.
Hancher will also present a robust series of residencies to bring artists into even closer contact with members of the community. Performers participating in residencies include Martha Redbone, Wycliffe Gordon, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Naturally 7, the Spencers, Ragamala Dance, Sones de México, Gallim Dance, and Working Group Theatre.
