Harilaos Stecopoulos, associate professor in the Department of English in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will succeed Russell Scott Valentino as editor of The Iowa Review (TIR) this fall.

Valentino, who served as editor for four years after assuming the post from longtime editor David Hamilton, has accepted a position as professor and chair of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Indiana University.

“He added an important international dimension to the magazine,” Stecopoulos says, referring to Valentino’s interest in international literature and translation. “And his creation of a Literature and Translation forum on TIR's website enriched the Review enormously.”

Valentino also obtained grant funding to produce an Iowa Review anthology for high school students. This anthology, Discoveries, was then made available to local and regional teachers for use in their classrooms.

Stecopoulos will take over as the magazine celebrates its 43rd year of publication. He is planning a redesign of the magazine and its website.

As one of the premier literary magazines in the United States, The Iowa Review has published a host of fine poetry and prose over three generations, including works by Raymond Carver, Ralph Ellison, Kurt Vonnegut, Joyce Carol Oates, Charles Simic, Italo Calvino, and Anne Carson. It has regularly published new writers, many of whom went on to become well-known literary figures.
