Colangelo receives international research award

Nicholas Colangelo, interim dean of the University of Iowa College of Education, has earned the International Award for Research from the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children, Inc. (WCGTC).

WCGTC is an international nonprofit organization providing “advocacy and support for gifted children,” according to its website, www.world-gifted.org.

“With this award, we wish to acknowledge the worth and value of your commitment, your work, your dedication and world class advocacy in relation to gifted education,” writes Taisir Subhi Yamin, president of WCGTC, in his letter announcing the award.

Colangelo, founder of the UI’s Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development, is the college’s Myron and Jacqueline Blank Professor of Gifted Education. His groundbreaking two-volume book, A Nation Deceived, which he co-authored with current Belin-Blank Center Director Susan Assouline and Miraca Gross, has been translated into nine languages.

Colangelo says it’s gratifying to think his work has had an impact on the international community.

“I do hope that my work on the social-emotional development of gifted students and on the cognitive and social benefits of acceleration have been a help to students around the world,” Colangelo says.

The International Award for Research will be presented at the WCGTC’s 20^th Anniversary World Conference, Aug. 10 in Louisville, Ky.
