Offices and Awards

Faculty—

Dr. Satheesh Elangovan, Department of Periodontics, has received a two-year, $104,625 grant from the Osteology Foundation (Switzerland) for his research project, “A Novel RNA Based Biomaterial for Bone Regeneration.”

The goal of this research will be to develop a safe and efficient nonviral RNA delivery system in vivo for periodontal and bone regeneration and other orthopedic applications. Co-investigators include Dr. Liu Hong, Dows and Prosthodontics; Dr. Aliasger K. Salem, College of Pharmacy; and Dr. Deborah V. Dawson, College of Dentistry. Drs. Georgia K. Johnson, Clark M. Stanford, and Michael Kormann (Germany) are consultants in this project.

“Creating a Shared Context for Value-Based Collaboration & Decision Making,” an article co-authored by Don Guckert and Jeri King for the Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA), has been selected the winner of APPA’s 2013 Rex Dillow Award for Outstanding Article.

The article presents a model for understanding the integration of services offered by a facilities management organization, and creates an appreciation for the complexity of the challenges in managing university physical assets.

Eligible articles are those written by a full-time employee of an APPA member institution and published in APPA’s Facilities Manager magazine. Non-author members of the Information & Research Committee of APPA select the best article based on the content, interest, readability, applicability, and ease of editing.

The award will be presented to Guckert and King at the APPA Annual Meeting on Aug. 2 in Minneapolis. This is their second Rex Dillow Award; the first was presented in 2003 for “The High Cost of Building a Better University.”

Aron Aji, adjunct professor of comparative literature in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was recently shortlisted for the PEN Translation Prize for his translation with Fred Stark of A Long Day's Evening by Bilge Karasu.
