The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has announced name changes for two of its departments, effective immediately.

  • The former Department of Geography is now the Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences. The new name reflects the department’s emphasis on studying the interactions of people with each other and their environment to better understand the complex human and natural processes that affect the Earth.
  • The former Department of Geoscience is now the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, reflecting the increasing importance of environmental science in the department’s teaching and research.

The name changes were approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, on June 4.
