The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free concert featuring the University Choir and the UI Women’s Chorale at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, in the Second Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

The University Choir, under the baton of graduate conductor John P. Rakes, will present “Psallite: An Evening of Psalms.” This concert, composed of five Psalm settings spanning the course of 400 years, includes a complete performance of one of J.S. Bach's earliest cantatas, performed with the Conductor’s Circle Chamber Orchestra.

The program is as follows:

  • Cantate Domino canticum novum, SWV 81 by Heinrich Schütz
  • Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, BWV 150 by Johann Sebastian Bach
  • Sing Ye Praises to Our King by Aaron Copland
  • Und ob ich schon wanderte im finstren Thal, Op. 31, no. 1 by Georg Schumann
  • Cantate Domino by Vytautas Miškinis

The UI Women's Chorale, led by Emily Spencer, will present works of Monteverdi, Bach, Mendelssohn, Fauré, and many others, featuring repertoire ranging from Italian Baroque canzonettes to South African folk tunes.

  • Sanctus from Lana Walter's Petite Mass
  • Den Tod niemand zwingen Kunnt from J.S. Bach's Christ lag in Todesbanden
  • Lift Thine Eyes from Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah
  • Robert Wetzler's Three Songs of Innocence
  • Io mi vivea and Si come crescon from Claudio Monteverdi's Canzonette a tre voci
  • Bunte Schlangen, Zweigezüngt! from Felix Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream
  • Le Ruisseau by Gabriel Fauré
  • Dubula by Stephen Hatfield

Sarah Zietlow will serve as accompanist for both ensembles.
