University of Iowa police and local public safety officials say a suspicious letter reported at Mayflower Residence Hall Monday is safe.

The UI Department of Public Safety, the Iowa City Fire Department and Johnson County Hazardous materials were called to the dorm after the UI received a report around 1:50 p.m. that a letter mailed to Mayflower was leaking a white powdery substance.

The Mayflower mailroom and front desk area were temporarily cordoned off and evacuated while police waited for a postal inspector to arrive and assist with the investigation.

After examining the envelope, the postal inspector determined the powder was not hazardous and posed no threat.
