Students living in the University of Iowa residence halls can help reduce the amount of landfill waste at move-out by participating in a Year-end Donation Drive on Wednesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 16.

Students can drop off furniture, clothing, housewares, and other items at these locations and times:

West side, Wednesday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Grand Ave., Quad Courtyard

  • East side, Thursday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Clinton Street near Burge Hall
  • Mayflower Residence Hall back parking lot, Thursday, May 16 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Most items can be accepted (see list), except for those items needing repair and broken or stained furniture.

The effort is organized by UI Housing, Goodwill of the Heartland, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Office of Sustainability, and the City of Iowa City. Students from UI student environmental organizations will help load the items on the Goodwill and ReStore trucks. The Crisis Center of Johnson County is collecting nonperishable food, unopened hygiene items and cleaning supplies in the lobby of each residence hall during move-out week.

Andrea Uhl, a graduate student in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the university, started the move-out collection drive three years ago as her class project for her undergraduate Sustainable Systems class. Last year, the two-day drive netted 3,733 pounds of material from the three locations.
