UI prairie burns to be conducted along Hawkins Drive and Mormon Trek Boulevard
Thursday, April 4, 2013

UI Facilities Management Landscape Services staff will be conducting prairie burns on three prairie remnants located along the bike trail connecting Hawkins Drive and Mormon Trek Blvd., and along the Hawkins Drive right-of-way on Friday, April 5. The burn is scheduled to begin at approximately 9 a.m., weather permitting.

Burning is a preferred prairie management practice over mowing because more of the unwanted vegetation is removed and the prairie responds with renewed vigor. UI Landscape Services conducts controlled burns about every three years at various prairie sites around campus.
