Iowa City Police are investigating the sexual assault of a female University of Iowa student during a party at a private residence that was reported in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 7.

According to a report to UI Police Sunday, the suspect is described as a thin, 6-foot, light skinned black male wearing a hat.

As a precaution UI Police recommend that people walk in groups when possible and report crimes immediately by calling 911. They also encourage people to use Nite Ride, Cambus and other reliable transportation services and to avoid situations or circumstances that may increase the risk to their personal safety.

Additionally, there are 22 emergency telephones stationed across campus. A single push of an illuminated button summons UI Police Department officers, allows dispatchers to hear the situation, and triggers a bright blue strobe light at the top of a 9-foot pole.

This information is being released in accordance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
