The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free recital by Volkan Orhon, UI associate professor of double bass, and pianist Rose Chancler at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The program will include works by Nicholas Walker, David Anderson, Giovanni Bottesini, Gaspor Cassado, and César Franck.

Orhon has established himself as one of the top double bassists in the world. He was a finalist and prizewinner in the Concert Artists Guild Solo Competition in New York City, and was the co-first place winner of the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition. Additionally, he distinguished himself as the first double bass player ever to win the grand prize overall and first prize for double bass at the American String Teacher's Association Solo Competition. Orhon has performed with internationally recognized musicians including Gary Karr, Fazil Say, and the Emerson and Tokyo String Quartets, and has been a soloist with the Adana and Bursa State Symphony Orchestras (Turkey), the El Paso, Cedar Rapids, and Hartford Symphony Orchestras, The Connecticut Orchestra, Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, and New Britain Symphony.

Chancler has played concerts across America, including solo recitals and concerto performances in Alaska, Arizona, New York, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Texas, Pennsylvania, California, Oklahoma, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Currently, Rose is focused on performing chamber music and presenting concerts in the Adirondack State Park. She is a founding member and Artistic Director of the new-music series Piano by Nature in Elizabethtown, N.Y. Rose collaborated with Orhon on a highly acclaimed CD release of violin and cello masterworks on the Centaur label. Rose has held teaching positions at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, the Baylor University School of Music, and the University of Iowa School of Music.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
