April 19-21 course offers universal certification

University of Iowa Recreational Services will offer the American Red Cross Water Safety Universal Certification course April 19-21.

Instructor candidates will learn to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics, and two levels of Parent Child Aquatics.

To enroll in this course, participants must be at least 16 years of age and able to demonstrate the following skills in good form:

  • Swim the following strokes: front crawl—25 yards; back crawl—25 yards; breaststroke—25 yards; elementary backstroke—25 yards; sidestroke—25 yards; butterfly—15 yards
  • Maintain position on back for one minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
  • Tread water for one minute

The course meets April 19, 5-10 p.m.; April 20, 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; and April 21, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The fee is $225.
