kia-hui tan posing with violin
Kia-Hui Tan

The University of Iowa Center for New Music will present a free solo violin recital by Kia-Hui Tan at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall.

The program will consist of winning works from the 2013 KH Tan Composition Competition for Solo Violin Works: Asian Inspirations. One such work is Joy Rising by Ching-chu Hu, who studied at the UI, among other places.

Tan has performed as concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician across the United States and in 20 countries on five continents, including at London's Barbican Hall and New York's Carnegie Weill Recital Hall. Included in her repertoire of more than 400 solo or chamber works are premiere performances of works by more than 70 living composers.

Currently associate professor of violin at The Ohio State University, Tan had been on faculty at Cornell University, University of Toledo, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Cleveland Music School Settlement before joining the Ohio State faculty in 2005. She is in demand as a master class presenter, adjudicator, strings coach, and guest conductor in high schools, colleges, and youth orchestras; her outreach activities have extended as far as China and Colombia.

The UI Center for New Music resides within the School of Music, part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI events. If you require an accommodation to participate in this program, contact the School of Music in advance at 319-335-1603.
