Ernest Pascarella holds the prestigious Mary Louise Petersen Chair in Higher Education in the University of Iowa College of Education and is the most cited researcher in his field, which focuses on college’s impact on students and student persistence in higher education.
Pascarella can also add citations on Google Scholar to his list of accolades.
According to scholargoogle.com, Pascarella’s work has been cited more than 22,000 times since the 1980s, numbering 10,408 citations in the last five years alone, and the number increases daily.
Pascarella ranks approximately 576th among all scholars with an email address ending in .edu on the site. Pascarella has authored more than 130 journal articles. His most-cited work is his award-winning, two-volume book, How College Affects Students, which has been cited almost 8,000 times combined.

Google Scholar is an online searchable index of mostly scholarly journals in the United States and Europe as well as scholarly books.
Pascarella, who has been at the UI since 1997, says he didn’t realize how many times his work was being cited, but the number does give him some satisfaction.
“When you get close to the end of your career, you start to take stock of your impact. How much you have been cited is one way to look at it in a reasonably objective way,” he says.
