The University of Iowa Center for New Music will present a free performance by the Center for New Music Ensemble, featuring guest composer Hans Tutschku of Harvard University at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 21, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The program will feature three compositions by Tutschku, along with works by Bert Van Herck (visiting assistant professor in the UI School of Music) and Gérard Grisey.

Tutschku has composed music for film, theater, and ballet, as well as instrumental and electroacoustic music. He has also conceived several sound installations and published articles on sound diffusion. A main focus of his work is improvisation with live-electronics, and he is regularly invited to give lectures and workshops on this topic. He has toured more than 30 countries with his Ensemble für Intuitive Musik Weimar. Since September 2004, Tutschku has been working as composition professor and director of the electroacoustic studios at Harvard University. He is the winner of many international composition competitions.

Van Herck received his doctorate in music from Harvard University. Before coming to the United States, he taught at the conservatory of Mechelen (Belgium) and received his training as a pianist and composer at the Lemmensinstitute (Belgium). His compositions have received international acclaim, with performances in 12 countries. Van Herck is working on a violin concerto for the Chamber Orchestra of Mechelen under the direction of Tom Van den Eynde with Guido de Neve as soloist.

The Center for New Music resides within the School of Music, which is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
