The University of Iowa String Quartet Residency Program—coordinated by violist Elizabeth Oakes, lecturer in the UI School of Music—will present a free, public performance by the Cavani String Quartet and pianist Navah Perlman at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The concert is part of the Cavani’s extended residency April 9-13 at the UI School of Music. The residency will include master classes, a public presentation on the publicly engaged work as part of a chamber music career, and numerous opportunities for UI School of Music students to work one-on-one with these guest ensembles.

The April 11 program will feature works by Beethoven, Dvorak, and Brahms.

The Ardore Quartet (Yoo-Jung Chang, cello; Manuel Tábora, viola; and Lucy Lewis and William Gentzsch, violins) will perform April 13 with the Cavani String Quartet.

The Cavani will kick off its performance slate Wednesday, April 10, at Mark Twain Elementary School. The quartet will be joined by the Ardore Quartet—a UI-based student quartet that performs recitals each semester and will tour this spring with Oakes—and Preucil School of Music students and faculty at the Cavani’s Family Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Preucil School of Music main campus, 524 Johnson St. in Iowa City.

  • Friday, April 12: “Team Up with Music,” chamber music workshop at the Preucil School of Music north campus (2916 Northgate Dr.), 5-6 p.m.
  • Friday, April 12: Chamber music master classes at the Preucil School of Music north campus (2916 Northgate Dr.), 7-8 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 13: “Coaching Strategies,” chamber music workshop aimed at teachers and parents, 11 a.m.-noon, Preucil School of Music main campus (524 Johnson St.)

The Cavani Quartet performs regularly on major series and festivals throughout North America and Europe. The Cavani Quartet has the honor of being a winner of the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award as well as numerous competitions including, Fischoff, Banff, and Coleman. Active proponents of contemporary music, the quartet has commissioned and performed a worldwide array of living composers and is a recipient of the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming.

Formed in 1984, the Cavani Quartet was appointed Quartet-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1988. The foursome has established itself as a dynamic leader in the field of Arts in Education, and has received a number of Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grants. Nationally acclaimed for their inspiring and innovative teaching and proactive approach to residencies, the quartet has developed creative programs for audiences of all ages, including a series of children’s concerts for the Chamber Music of Lincoln Center.

Known for her lyrical eloquence on the stage, Perlman has established herself as one of the most poetic and admired pianists of her generation. She has performed to critical acclaim in major concert venues throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. She began her piano studies at age 6 with Ronit Amir Lowenthal and later attended the Juilliard School where she worked with Herbert Stessin. She also studied chamber music with Robert Mann, Felix Galimir, and Dorothy DeLay. Perlman holds an honors degree in art history from Brown University.

Perlman has appeared with numerous orchestras throughout North America including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Nashville Symphony, and Montreal Symphony. Internationally, Perlman has appeared with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Mexico, the Israel Philharmonic, the Prague Symphony, and the New Japan Philharmonic in Suntory Hall. She has given recitals in Washington, D.C., Dallas, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Scottsdale, and Baltimore.
