The University of Iowa School of Music will present a guest recital by John Hines, associate professor of voice at the University of Northern Iowa, at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in the University Capitol Centre recital hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

The program will feature:

  • Arise, Ye Subterranean Winds by Henry Purcell
  • Two Concert Arias for Bass Voice (Così dunque tradisci…Aspri rimorsi attroci K. 432 and Alcandro, lo confesso…Non so donde viene K. 512) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
  • Le Cor by Ange Flégier
  • Three Lieder for Low Bass Voice (Das Thal, Op. 51, No. 1; Der Einsame, Op. 51, No. 2; Im Spätboot, Op. 56, No.3) by Richard Strauss
  • Songs and Dances of Death by Modest Mussorgsky

Hines has enjoyed a multi-faceted career as a concert and operatic artist, master class clinician, and vocal pedagogue throughout the United States and abroad. His most recent achievement was celebrating his March 25, Carnegie Hall debut as bass soloist in Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass. Since 2007 he has made five solo concert tours to St. Petersburg, Russia, performing both traditional art song recitals as well as concerts of Russian operatic, classical, and popular romance music, many of which have been broadcast over national television and radio throughout the Russian Federation, earning him the title “The American Chaliapin.”
