The University of Iowa has named 35 Presidential Scholars for 2013, offering them the most prestigious honor for first-year students planning to attend the university.

Recipients were selected from a field of more than 1,000 applicants. Presidential Scholarships are awarded on the basis of high school grade-point averages, college entrance exam scores, performance on the essay portion of the scholarship application, and school or community service and leadership. The scholarship package is worth $52,000 over four years.

This year’s Presidential Scholars and their parents are listed below by state and hometown. Recipients have until May 1, to accept the scholarship offer.
