News briefing on 'Cancer in Iowa: 2013' report is Wednesday, March 20

WHAT: The annual "Cancer in Iowa" report issued by the State Health Registry of Iowa, based in the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

WHO: Charles F. Lynch, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of the State Health Registry of Iowa and professor of epidemiology at the UI College of Public Health, will present the report findings and discuss the report's focus on breast cancer.

George Weiner, M.D., director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI and president of the Board of Directors for the Iowa Cancer Consortium, will discuss the latest in breast cancer research, detection, and treatment.

Sonia Sugg, M.D., associate professor in the division of surgical oncology and endocrine surgery with the UI Carver College of Medicine and medical director of UI Breast Health, will detail how molecular subtyping is helping to improve the quality of life for breast cancer survivors.

In addition to the physicians, a patient affected by breast cancer will also be available to offer her personal perspective.

Following the formal remarks and the Q & A session, the presenters will be available for one-on-one interviews.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Copies of "Cancer in Iowa: 2013" will be available at the conference. CD-ROMs of maps/figures from the report will also be available for reporters only. The report includes estimates of cancer diagnoses and deaths in Iowa for 2013 and a special section on breast cancer.
