John Manning

John Manning, associate professor of tuba in the University of Iowa School of Music, will give a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus. The performance is free and open to the public.

Manning will be joined by Jason Sifford on piano and Katharine Wohlman on organ.

The program will include Concerto for Tuba by Barbara York, Three Browning Songs, op. 44 by Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (transcription by John Manning), the world premiere of Sonata en Evolución Constante for tuba and piano by Roberto Pintos (commissioned by John Manning), Intra Muros by Katharine Wohlman, and the world premiere of Grant Wood Sonata by Barbara York (commissioned by John Manning).

Manning is a founding member of the award-winning Yamaha performing ensemble, the Atlantic Brass Quintet. Originally from Raynham, Mass., Mr. Manning received his undergraduate degree from Boston University and his graduate degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has served on the faculty of the Boston Conservatory, Boston University's School for the Arts, andTanglewood Institute, and the University of Massachusetts. An active freelance musician, Manning has performed with the Boston Symphony, the Empire Brass, and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.
