John Jeremiah Sullivan will read from his book of essays, Pulphead, at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. The reading also will be streamed live on the University of Iowa Writing University website.

Sullivan’s reading will be followed by a book signing and reception.

Pulphead was named a 2011 New York Times Notable Book, a Time Magazine Top 10 Nonfiction Book of 2011, and one of Amazon's Best of the Month for November 2011. Sullivan's essay "Mr. Lytle: An Essay," which recounts his time spent living with a then-geriatric Andrew Nelson Lytle, won a 2011 National Magazine Award and a 2011 Pushcart Prize.

Sullivan’s first book, Blood Horses: Notes of a Sportswriter's Son, was published in 2004. It is part personal reminiscence, part elegy for his father (sportscaster Mike Sullivan), and part investigation into the history and culture of the thoroughbred racehorse. Sullivan is a contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine, a contributing editor of Harper's Magazine, and southern editor of the Paris Review.
