Also: Mike Daisey to perform American Utopias
Monday, December 10, 2012

The University of Iowa’s Hancher has announced an addition to its Club Hancher series. Jazz trio The Bad Plus will perform at The Mill at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2.

The Bad Plus—pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson, and drummer David King—has recently released Made Possible, the band’s eighth recording. The album adds to the band’s strong body of convention-busting original music, which is spiced with innovative covers of popular music. The band has played Iowa City before, performing during the 2006 edition of the Iowa City Jazz Festival, but the performances at The Mill will offer audiences a more intimate experience with the groundbreaking musicians.

The concert will be the fourth Club Hancher event of the Hancher season, and follows the Feb. 14-15 performances by jazz saxophonist Miguel Zenón, who was honored with both a Guggenheim Fellowship and MacArthur Fellow “genius grant” in the same year. All About Jazz describes his music as “modern jazz at its very best.”

The Club Hancher performances by Miguel Zenón and The Bad Plus are supported, in part, by a partnership with the Jazz Arts Group's Jazz Audiences Initiative, with support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Daisey to perform American Utopias

Hancher has also announced that monologist Mike Daisey, most well-known for his controversial work The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, will perform his new work, American Utopias, during his February performances in Mabie Theatre on the UI campus. In American Utopias, Daisey considers Disneyland, Burning Man, and the Occupy movement. The Chicago Tribune calls the performances “superb,” calling Daisey “a keen cultural observer with a ruthless streak.”
