The University of Iowa School of Music will present a guest recital by violist Istvan Szabó and pianist Narae Joo at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the University Capitol Centre recital hall.

The recital is free and open to the public.

Szabó is a graduate of the University of Illinois and of the “George Dima” Academy of Music in Cluj, Romania, with a double major in viola performance and pedagogy. He appeared in several solo and chamber music recitals in the United States and Europe. He served as principal viola for the Prairie Ensemble and associate principal violist with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, where he also appeared as soloist. Currently, he is associate principal violist with the Quincy Symphony Orchestra and assistant principal violist with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. Szabó performs regularly as the violist for the Julstrom String Quartet. He has been on the music faculty at Western Illinois University since 2005. Previously he served as viola and violin instructor at Eastern Illinois University and teaching assistant at the University of Illinois.

Joo received a Bachelor of Music degree from Seoul National University under Hae Sun Paik. She holds an Master of Music from the University of Michigan, where she had studied under Professor Arthur Greene while being the recipient of the Beverly Franzau Baker Scholarship. In May of this year, Joo received her doctorate in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music. Since 2011, she has been working as a faculty assistant at Western Illinois University. She has competed in various competitions in South Korea and the United States and she continues to perform widely in both countries. Joo participated in the Moulin D’Andy Academy in France and was the Grand Prix winner of Moulin International Piano Competition.
