The University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra and Choruses will present Brahms’ Schicksalslied, op. 54 (Song of Fate) and Carmina Burana (Songs of Beuren) by Carl Orff at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

The performance, under the direction of Timothy Stalter from the UI School of Music faculty, will be free and open to the public. Student soloists for the performance will be Sarah Fisk, soprano, and James Judd, tenor; faculty soloist will be Stephen Swanson, baritone.

Four choral ensembles from the School of Music will make up the combined chorus for the performance: the Women's Chorale, Kate McRae, conductor; University Choir, Timothy Stalter, conductor; Camerata, David Puderbaugh, conductor; and Kantorei, Timothy Stalter, conductor.

Stalter joined the UI faculty as director of choral activities in 1999. An active member of the American Choral Directors Association, he frequently presents clinics and workshops in choral conducting around the United States. He is also active as a tenor soloist specializing in the role of the Evangelist in the Passions of J.S. Bach and Heinrich Schuetz.

The Symphony Orchestra is conducted by William LaRue Jones, who since 1997 has been professor of music and director of orchestral studies at the UI. In 2011 he received the distinct honor of becoming a Collegiate Fellow in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His conducting schedule includes a wide array of professional, festival, collegiate, and student ensembles throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, ranging from the Minnesota Orchestra and the Minneapolis Pops to the Penang (Malaysia) Symphony, the Orquestra Sinfonica do Theatro da Paz (Belem, Brazil), the Antofagasta (Chile) Symphony, and the Symphony Orchestra of Lucerne (Switzerland).
