L. Michael White, Ronald Nelson Smith Professor of Classics and Religious Studies and Director of the Institute for the Study of Antiquity and Christian Origins at University of Texas at Austin, will visit the University of Iowa campus Oct. 22-24 as an Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor.

White’s visit includes several events. He will present “A Jewish Community in the Port of Rome: Recent Excavations in the Ostia Synagogue,” at 6 p.m., Monday Oct. 22, in 140 Schaeffer Hall.

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, there will be a coffee hour at 4 p.m. in the third floor atrium of Gilmore Hall, followed by a colloquium, “Solving a papyrological puzzle with MSI: Ordering the fragments of PHerc 1471 (Phildemus’s ‘On Frank Criticism’)” at 5 p.m. in 106 Gilmore Hall.

At noon on Wednesday, Oct. 24, White will be a part of a brown bag lunch, “Scripting Jesus: The Gospel Authors as Storytellers,” in the third floor atrium of Gilmore Hall.

White’s visit is sponsored by the UI Department of Classics, Center for the Book, Digital Studio for the Public Humanities, Department of History, and Department of Religious Studies, all in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
