Assimakopoulos to perform works of contemporary composers

Nina Assimakopoulos will be playing an all-solo flute recital of contemporary composers at the University of Iowa on Friday, Oct. 5.

Internationally acclaimed flutist Nina Assimakopoulos will perform at the University of Iowa at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall.

The recital is free and open to the public.

Assimakopoulos will be playing an all-solo flute recital of contemporary composers such as Shulamit Ran, Ian Clarke, Wil Offermans, and Maggi Payne.

A champion of contemporary music, Assimakopoulos is credited with more than 50 international world-premiere performances and commissions, and has recorded four solo CDs. She has received numerous awards and prizes, and has performed as principal flute with the Munich City Opera, the Bavarian Radio Academy Orchestra, and the Toledo and New Hampshire Symphony Orchestras.

She is currently visiting professor of flute at West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va., and has served on the faculties of Houghton College and Bowling Green State University. She studied with Peter Lloyd and Paul Meisen, earning degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington, and the Munich Academy of Music.

In addition to her work as a musician, Assimakopoulos is a prize-winning painter whose work has been exhibited at museums and in internationally juried shows.
