Author and sustainable business leader comes to campus

L. Hunter Lovins, author and sustainable business leader, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in Room W10 (the Buchanan Auditorium) of the Pappajohn Business Building at the University of Iowa.

Lovins will discuss her recent book, The Way Out: Kick-starting Capitalism to Save Our Economic Ass. She will also address how Eastern Iowa companies can bring together both sustainable and business practices and will offer strategies business leaders can use to achieve their goals.

The free lecture is sponsored by the UI Lecture Committee and the UI Office of Sustainability. A book signing will follow the lecture in Room W10.

Lovins is president and founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions (NCS). NCS educates executive decision-makers in business, government, and civil society to restore and enhance the natural and human capital while increasing prosperity and quality of life. In partnership with leading thinkers and implementers, NCS creates innovative, practical tools and strategies to enable companies, communities, and countries to become more sustainable.

Trained as a sociologist and lawyer, Lovins is currently a faculty member at Bainbridge Graduate Institute and the chief insurgent of the madrone project. Lovins has consulted for scores of industries and governments worldwide, including the International Finance Corporation, Royal Dutch Shell, Interface, Clif Bar, and Wal-Mart.

Recipient of such honors as the Right Livelihood Award, Lindbergh Award, and Leadership in Business, she was named Time Magazine's 2000 Hero of the Planet and in 2009 Newsweek dubbed her a "Green Business Icon." She has co-authored nine books and hundreds of papers, including the 1999 book, Natural Capitalism, 2006 e-book Climate Protection Manual for Cities, and the 2009 Transforming Industry in Asia.
