The Cinematheque film series of the University of Iowa International Writing Program (IWP) will screen the 1962 Czechoslovakian feature The Sun in a Net at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in Room E105 of the Adler Journalism Building.

The film will be introduced by IWP resident Jana Benova from Slovakia, and a discussion will follow the screening.

The Sun in a Net was a landmark in the development of Czech and Slovak filmmaking, moving from the repressive “socialist realist” mandates of the 1950s toward a new wave of openness and experimentation through the ‘60s.

It has been included in a list of the 10 best films in the filmmaking history of the former Czechoslovakia. The film has been digitally restored to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Benova has written three books of poetry, a short-story collection, an essay collection and two novels. She works as an editor at the Slovak Theatre Institute. Her participation in the IWP was made possible by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
