Argentine writer Frederico Falco, who is in residence at the University of Iowa this fall through the International Writing Program (IWP), will read from The Future Is Not Ours: New Latin American Fiction in a free event at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in Prairie Lights Books. The reading will be streamed live on the Virtual Writing University.

This anthology, which brings together 23 Latin American writers who were born between 1970 and 1980, offers an overview of contemporary Spanish-language literature and introduces a generation of writers who came of age in the time of military dictatorships; and who witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War, the birth of the Internet, the murders of Ciudad Jurez, Mexico, and the 9/11 attacks.

Falco, who was born in 1977, was educated at Blas Pascal University in Argentina and New York University. In 2004 he was given the Young Writers Award by the Spanish Cultural Centre of Córdoba, Argentina. In 2005 he received a grant for improvement from the National Trust for the Arts of Argentina, and in 2009, a scholarship from New York University and the Banco Santander Foundation.

In 2010 he was selected as one of the Best of Young Spanish Language Novelists by Granta Magazine.

Falco is one of more than 30 writers from 28 countries in residence at the IWP this fall. He participates courtesy of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. IWP is part of the UI Graduate College.
