Employers showcase work-study and other campus jobs
Wednesday, August 15, 2012

University of Iowa students interested in campus employment for the fall 2012 semester are invited to attend a Student Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Sponsored by the UI Office of Student Financial Aid, the fair will feature university and off-campus employers who qualify for work-study support based on their government or nonprofit status. A list of employers attending the fair will appear in The Daily Iowan on Monday, Aug. 20. Employers will offer on-campus, part-time hourly positions and work-study positions at both on-campus and a limited number of eligible nonprofit off-campus sites.

More than 1,500 students attended the 2011 fair, and many received job offers or interviews that day. Twenty-nine employers offering numerous job opportunities attended the 2011 event.

Students with work-study awards should not experience any difficulty finding jobs, and the job fair is a great place to start the job search, according to Cindy Seyfer, associate director of the UI Office of Student Financial Aid.

In addition, students who were not awarded work-study will find opportunities at the fair, since many employers attending will hire students under both the part-time hourly (non-work-study) and the work-study programs, she adds.

“Many benefits exist for students who are able to balance the demands of employment and academics,” says Seyfer. “These benefits include paying for educational expenses without incurring loan debt and gaining valuable work experience to enhance resumes.”

In addition, employment on the university campus offers a variety of unique benefits including flexible work hours, convenient locations often near classes or places of residence, the opportunity to work with mentors in a career field, and competitive wages. Off-campus nonprofit agencies offer a variety of benefits including the opportunity to work in an agency whose mission is to benefit community members.

Student Financial Aid staff will be available to answer questions regarding employment options, verify work-study eligibility, and explain the payroll process.

The Student Job Fair is part of Welcome Back Week 2012, an annual event designed to welcome new students and help acquaint them with the campus, as well as to welcome returning students.
