WHAT: Press conference and kickoff of the Zipcar car-sharing service being offered this fall by the University of Iowa and the City of Iowa City.

WHERE: Penn State Room (337) of the UI Iowa Memorial Union and Hubbard Park.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, Aug. 22. Following a Q&A session with media at 10 a.m. in IMU Room 337, Zipcar representatives will be on hand in Hubbard Park with a Zipcar Ford Focus to explain how the car-sharing program works.

WHO: Zipcar representatives; Dave Ricketts, director of UI parking and transportation; Liz Christiansen, director of the UI Office of Sustainability; and Chris O’Brien, director of transportation services with the City of Iowa City.

WHY?: Zipcar provides on-demand access to “wheels when you want them” for students, faculty, and staff, for reservations by the hour or by the day. Ten Zipcar vehicles will be stationed in designated spots around campus and downtown Iowa City. The service is expected to reduce the total number of cars on campus, free up parking spaces, and help reduce carbon emissions. Zipcar members can reserve Zipcars for as little as $7 per hour, which includes gas, insurance, and 180 miles of driving per day.
