University of Iowa fraternity Delta Sigma Delta and student organization Dance Marathon were participants in the recent Sand in the City event in downtown Iowa City.

This year, the event's theme was "Around the World," with an emphasis on world landmarks.

The fraternity began brainstorming ideas for the build in May and came up with the Great Wall of China being squeezed out of a tube of toothpaste. The idea fit well with the team’s sponsors: Oral Surgery Associates of Iowa City and Endodontic Associates of Iowa City.

The fraternity worked with Nate Otis from Rohrbach Associates, PC, who converted the team’s idea into a design. Otis' design and the sculpture won Best Overall Design in this year’s competition.

Dance Marathon, which creates and sustains special projects to provide emotional and financial support for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients and their families treated at University of Iowa Children's Hospital, created a sculpture depicting iconic images of London.

Sponsored by Sueppels Siding and Remodeling, Dance Marathon's sculture included a telephone booth, a double-decker bus and Big Ben.
