This semester the Proseminar in Cinema and Culture, a free screening and discussion series sponsored by the Institute for Cinema and Culture and University of Iowa International Programs, will depart in a journey across the arts with the moving image serving as compass.

The series will survey how filmmakers and artists across the globe and along the historical trajectory of cinema have negotiated the aesthetic and discursive placement of film among the other arts. The focus will be on films that function as "texts" on artistic praxis at the nexus of cinema and painting, sculpture, photography, dance, theater, architecture, music, and video art.

Each week or set of weeks will focus on an individual art whose rapport with the "cinematic" will be explored through screening of rare and archival prints of relevant films, guest lectures by leading scholars and artists, show and tell of artworks and special collection materials, special events in collaboration with the School of Art and Art History and the UI Museum of Art, and post-screening discussion among participants.

The series is free and open to the public. All events take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays in 101 Becker Communication Studies Building, unless otherwise noted. The schedule of films is available at ccl.clas.uiowa.edu/node/283.

The Proseminar in Cinema and Culture is sponsored by International Programs, the Institute for Cinema and Culture, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
