The gritty theater noir of Trouble is My Business was adapted by James Glossman from two stories by mystery master Raymond Chandler, featuring his tough-as-nails detective, Philip Marlowe. This fresh adaptation was premiered earlier this year at the Portland Stage Company.

Set in 1940s Los Angeles, Trouble Is My Business follows the hard-drinking, tough-talking private eye through the city’s underworld of corrupt cops, gangsters, hit men, femmes fatales, and damsels in distress as he unravels the clues to two elaborate crimes.

Glossman is the associate artistic director of the Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, where he has directed numerous world premieres, including his own plays Flying Crows and The Special Prisoner (both adapted from novels by Jim Lehrer). He has also adapted the works of Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Mark Twain, James Joyce, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Stephen Crane, and others for the stage.

Admission to Trouble is My Business is $5. Tickets are available in advance from the Hancher box office, and any remaining tickets will be on sale at the door, one hour before curtain time.

Tickets are also still available for the Iowa Summer Rep production of Sherlock’s Last Case by Charles Marowitz, about which critic Sharon Perlmutter wrote, “Described as a black comedy, Sherlock’s Last Case takes what we know about Holmes and Watson, and cranks it up a notch to the point where it becomes funny...at heart, Marowitz’s Holmes and Watson are Holmes and Watson; they’re just Holmes and Watson a little funnier.”

Iowa Summer Rep is the professional company of the UI Department of Theatre Arts in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The UI Summer Session is a sponsor of Iowa Summer Rep.
