Top high-school musicians from throughout the Midwest, and from as far away as Texas, are converging on the University of Iowa for the 2012 Iowa Summer Music Camps. The camps will include nine free concerts, June 12-29.
The 60th annual Iowa Summer Music Camps, under the leadership of UI Director of Bands Richard Mark Heidel, offer students musical training and experience beyond what may available in their home schools, including group instruction, master classes, and classroom instruction in most phases of instrumental music—plus a preview of life on a major university campus.
Week 1: Band and Orchestra Camp
Tuesday, June 12: Faculty Recital, 7:30 p.m., Riverside Recital Hall.
Friday, June 15: Hawkeye Band and Summer Hawk Orchestra, 7 p.m., Iowa Memorial Union Ballroom. Conductors are William LaRue Jones, director of the UI Symphony Orchestra, and Richard Fischer from Concordia University Chicago.
Week 2: Total Percussion and Piano Camps
Tuesday, June 19: Diego Arango, piano, 7:30 p.m., Riverside Recital Hall.
Thursday, June 21: Percussion Faculty All-Stars, 7:30 p.m., 150 Music Building West Interim Building (MWIB).
Friday, June 22: Percussion Camp Concert/Demonstration, 7 p.m., 150 MWIB; Piano Camp Concert/Demonstration, 7 p.m., Riverside Recital Hall.
Week 3: Jazz Camp
Tuesday, June 26: Jazz Faculty Concert, 7:30 p.m., University Capitol Centre (UCC) Recital Hall
Thursday, June 28: "Laranja" (Dan Padley, guitar; Michael Jarvey, piano; John Caudy, drums; Blake Shaw, bass), 7:30 p.m., UCC Recital Hall.
Friday, June 29: Jazz Camp Concert, 1:30 p.m., Macbride Hall Auditorium
Students in the Band and Orchestra Camps can take instruction in subjects including music theory, music history (including the history of rock and the history of jazz), double-reed making, conducting, piano, Finale and GarageBand software, and world percussion.
Students enrolled in the Total Percussion Camp will experience a week in the life of the acclaimed Iowa Percussion program, under the leadership of Daniel Moore. Students will explore a wide variety of topics, including world, concert, jazz, and marching percussion, and will have an opportunity to study with top percussion specialists.
The Piano Camp, coordinated by faculty member Alan Huckleberry and featuring faculty member Rene Lecuona as guest artist, will expose students to a wide variety of piano-related topics, plus daily individual lessons.
Faculty member Brent Sandy leads the Jazz Camp, which also draws on the expertise of saxophonist Chris Merz, trombonist Rich Medd, guitarist Steve Grismore, percussionist Jim Dreier, bassist Mark Urness, and pianist David Hoffman, with whom students will interact and perform throughout a week of music-making in small-group settings.
