The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will honor six individuals at the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony and luncheon Friday, June 8 at the Levitt Center for University Advancement.

Established in 1998, the Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor the college bestows upon its graduates, recognizing their efforts to improve the delivery of health care, change the course of medical education, and advance biomedical research. Awards are presented this year in two categories, Achievement and Service.

The Award for Achievement recognizes significant personal accomplishments in science, medicine, and education. This year’s recipients are:

  • Shlomo Ben-Haim (’93 fellowship, internal medicine), an innovator in the development of medical technologies and an entrepreneur and leader in the medical device industry.
  • Ann Bonham (’80 M.S., ’86 Ph.D., pharmacology), chief scientific officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges and a strong advocate for research and research training.
  • James Hanson (’69 M.D.), whose career has encompassed pediatrics, medical genetics, birth defects epidemiology, and public policy and service to Iowa and the nation
  • Kenneth Mann (’67 Ph.D., biochemistry), whose research on blood clot formation has advanced the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of thrombotic and hemorrhagic diseases.

The Award for Service honors meritorious leadership and service in a professional capacity or to a community, state, or nation. The recipients are:

  • Allan Rashford (’73 M.D.), a physician and pastor dedicated to serving the less fortunate in his home state of South Carolina and around the world.
  • Laverne Wintermeyer (’43 B.M., ’48 M.A., ’61 M.D., ’68 residency, pediatrics), who demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protect the health of Iowans during 18 years as state epidemiologist and medical director.
