In what organizers believe to be a first, the UI's selection for 2012 Mom and Dad of the Year are husband and wife. Rich and Patti Schmitz, of Waterloo, were honored for their extensive volunteer work—and for their perseverance. Their home has been hit by a tornado twice in 10 years.

This year's UI Mom and Dad of the Year, Patti and Rich Schmitz of Waterloo, have experienced devastation and tragedy firsthand. Both were nominated by their daughter, UI student Anna Schmitz. Within the past 10 years, their home was struck by a tornado, in 2002 and 2007, respectively.
