Nominations are now being taken for the newly renamed Susan C. Buckley Distinguished Achievement Award for Staff and May Brodbeck Distinguished Achievement Award for Faculty. The two awards recognize outstanding achievement and impact by persons affiliated with the UI, particularly those considered role models or mentors for women or girls.
Dlouhy wins inaugural Getch Scholar Award for early-career neurosurgeons

Brian Dlouhy, MD, UI assistant professor of neurosurgery and member of the Pappajohn Biomedical Institute, has been named the first Getch Scholar by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the Congress of Neurosurgeons.

A high-energy physics group, led by Yasar Onel and Jane Nachtman at the University of Iowa, has designed and built a sub-detector to better understand what happened immediately after the universe's birth. The Zero Degree Calorimeter measures particles' shower, which mimics hot plasma created right after the Big Bang.

James Wetzel, a native Iowan and research assistant in physics and astronomy, has been building miniature replicas, to exacting specifications, of the world's most advanced particle detector. The UI physics graduate used a bank of 3-D printers to create models of the Compact Muon Solenoid detector.
