UI crews adjust flood-mitigation measures in keeping with conditions
Tuesday, June 11, 2013

With the conditions on the UI campus relatively stable, UI Facilities Management staff are preparing to remove a section of HESCO barriers along Iowa Ave., north of the English-Philosophy Building.

Opening the flood barrier will improve access to the building and provide a safe pedestrian passage. Should forecasts change, the barrier can be reconstructed within several hours.

Facilities Management staff continue to closely watch building conditions, shore up flood protections where needed, and make adjustments that enhance safety and building access. Most university operations remain normal.

All barricades and closed sections of campus must be avoided for safety reasons. The fast-moving Iowa River itself remains a risk—stay clear of the river and all flooded areas.

On Tuesday, June 11, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported the level of the Coralville Reservoir at 705.30 feet, a drop of .8 feet since the preceding day. Reservoir inflows and outflows continue to drop, with Tuesday’s outflow at 17,500 cubic feet per second (cfs).

As of Tuesday, the corps planned to reduce outflows to 14,000 cfs on June 15, then to 10,000 cfs on June 16. Rain remains possible this week, so measures are subject to change.

At 10,000 cfs, it’s expected that floodwaters will drop below the elevation of Dubuque St. Once the City of Iowa City cleans and possibly repairs elements of Dubuque St., this important access point is likely to reopen.

For ongoing updates, University Communication and Marketing (UCM) has established an Iowa Now hub for the latest information about flood preparations at now.uiowa.edu/keywords/flood-updates-2013, and flood-related FAQs can be found here. Additionally,UCM is providing information via Twitter (hashtag#UIFloodUpdates).

Questions about flood preparations and related issues may be directed via email to uiflood-questions@uiowa.edu. UCM staff will track down answers as soon as possible or refer queries to appropriate sources.
