The University of Iowa moved up one spot to No. 33 in the latest rankings of the nation’s best public universities published by the magazine U.S. News & World Report.

The 2017 U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" rankings released Tuesday, Sept. 13, place the UI in a tie with Michigan State University and the Colorado School of Mines.

The UI is currently ranked 82nd in the "Best National Universities" category, which contains 300 U.S. public, private, and for-profit institutions. That ranking is unchanged from last year.

The magazine also ranked undergraduate programs in business and engineering. Among all public and private universities, the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business placed 33rd, up one spot from last year.

The College of Engineering is ranked 41st among public universities with doctoral programs. Among all public and private universities, the College of Engineering is ranked 63rd, unchanged from last year.

The UI also made the “National Universities” list of the 2016 Best Colleges for Veterans. The UI ranked 50th among all publics and privates, up 15 spots from last year. Among publics, it was ranked 24th.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on reputational data obtained from questionnaires filled out by administrators at more than 1,300 colleges and universities, as well as from objective data submitted to a national data archive. The collected data are scored on a variety of indicators of academic quality in the following categories: assessment by academic peers and high school counselors, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance, and alumni giving.
