Don’t overlook these easy-to-miss dates, deadlines, and resources
Wednesday, September 21, 2016

Don’t worry—you’re not the only one. College life is hectic. Juggling classes, a part-time job, student groups, and keeping up with friends might lead some University of Iowa students to simply forget about certain important deadlines and responsibilities.

Here’s a short list of dates, deadlines, and resources students sometimes overlook.

1. If you want to graduate in December, you have to apply for your degree.

Sept. 30 is the deadline to apply for undergraduate degrees, and without your application, you can’t graduate. Hawkeyes looking to don their cap and gown in December need to mark their calendars. If you miss this deadline, you will be charged a fee. Follow these easy steps to apply for your degree.

2. Not all classes are offered every semester.

Oct. 10 is when new course offerings are released for viewing on MyUI, meaning you can look up what classes to take before early registration begins Nov. 7. But watch out—many students forget that not all classes are offered every semester. If you forget to sign up for a required course, it might be another year before you can take it, which can add to how long it takes you to graduate. Be smart: Plan ahead.

3. Pay your U-Bill or you can’t register for classes.

Starting Nov. 7, students can begin signing up for winter and spring 2017 courses. While some students might get their first picks, if you haven’t paid your U-Bill, you won’t be able to access the registration screens. Check MyUI for your registration time and day, make sure to have authorization from your advisor, and pay the balance on your U-Bill.

4. You can get Microsoft Office for free.

Don’t pay $100 for the Microsoft Office package. As a UI student, you can get it for free. You can even install it on up to five devices. All you have to do is follow the instructions at https://its.uiowa.edu/support/article/3868.

5. NITE RIDE is open to all genders.

If it’s after 10 p.m. and you’re worried about getting home, consider NITE RIDE. It’s free, available to all genders, and can pick you up from on campus or downtown and drop you off farther than you might think. Check your destination in the boundary map and download the app. The next time you find yourself facing a long walk home in the dark, get yourself a safe NITE RIDE instead.
