Faculty—

Lindell Joseph, assistant professor in the College of Nursing, has been elected vice president of Programs and Professional Development on the board of directors of the Council on Graduate Education for Administration in Nursing.

Howard Butcher, associate professor in the College of Nursing, and Jean Jordan, Clerk III in the UI Heart Clinic, have received an Obermann Center for Advanced Studies Interdisciplinary Research Grant for their project, “Linguistic Analysis of Structured Written Emotional Expression: Revealing what is revealed.”

Dr. Philip Wertz, professor in the College of Dentistry, was recently awarded the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) Maison G. de Navarre Medal Award. Wertz received the award at the SCC Annual Scientific Meeting and Technology Showcase in New York City on Dec. 12, 2013.

Ying-Chih, Soonhye Park, associate professor and Brian M. Hand, professor in the College of Education, were selected for the 2014 Outstanding Paper award for their conference paper, "Tracing Elementary Students' Use of Talk and Writing for Knowledge Development through Argument-based Inquiry." The award will be presented at the Awards Luncheon on April 1 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Vilia Tarvydas, professor in the College of Education, was appointed counselor educator on the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs board effective July 1, 2014.

Staff—

Laura Cullen, staff nurse in the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care at UI Hospitals and Clinics, and her research team, have been awarded the newly-established Adult Clinical Practice Collaborative Research Award. The grant is titled "Cognitive Work Associated with Evidence-Based Pain Management."

This is a new donor-funded grant that supports collaborative research between UI Hospitals and Clinics nurses and College of Nursing faculty.

Kai Yi, assistant research scientist in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been named a Large Hadron Collider Physics Center Fellow. One of 22 Fellows, Yi will continue his work on exotic mesons and searches for new physics at the Large Hadron Collider using rare processes. The LHC Physics Center is located at Fermilab, where Yi is primarily based. More information about the 2014 LHC Fellows is available here.

Carol K. Smith, assistant professor in the College of Education,presented "Oh the Places They Will Go! Academic and Career Counseling with Gifted Students," lecture at the Iowa School Counseling Association Conference, in Des Moines, Iowa in November 2013.
