A device conceived at the University of Iowa and designed to restore movement and flexibility to the human ankle has made it to market.

The company Zimmer Holdings, Inc. debuted the Trabecular Metal Total Ankle at the 2013 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual meeting, which began Friday in Chicago. The ankle replacement product sprung from research by former UI orthopedics and biomedical engineering associate professor Charles Saltzman and two others and was licensed by the UI to Zimmer in 2002.
