UIMA's First Friday for April features Kabel art
Monday, March 25, 2013

Experience “The Here, the Now, and the Then” at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception on April 5 from 5-7 p.m. at hotelVetro. For $5, enjoy refreshments, light hors d’oeuvres, art by Des Moines-based Larassa Kabel, and toe-tapping indie pop tunes. A DIY drawing table will also be available for artists of all ages to get inspired.

Larassa Kabel received her Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors from Iowa State University with an emphasis in fibers. She translated the focused, repetitive practice of embroidery and weaving to traditional drawing, painting, and printmaking through the high level of craftsmanship of photo realism. The practice of making becomes a meditation on such subjects as gender, love, and loss as she methodically builds her surfaces into highly rendered images of women, children, and animals in ambiguous states or situations. Her current series, "Any Minute Now," is comprised of life-size colored pencil drawings of horses falling through space.

Kabel has had solo shows at the PEEL Gallery, Houston, Moberg Gallery, and the Des Moines Art Center. She is represented by Moberg Gallery, Des Moines, and Horsebox Gallery, London. Her work is included in numerous group shows and public and private collections across the country. Most recently one of Kabel’s paintings was chosen to grace the 2012 White House Holiday card.

UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend and mingle with other art-enthusiasts for a great cause.
