A summer of opportunity for future health professionals

The Summer Health Professions Education Program celebrates 30 years of preparing students who are underrepresented in the health professions for careers in health and medicine. The program has introduced nearly 30,000 first- and second-year college students, including those at the UI, to careers in medicine, dentistry, and other health professions.

Making Iowa the next step from Harvard

Faculty members win UI Libraries OpenHawks grants

The University of Iowa Libraries has awarded 15 grants for Open Educational Resource (OER) projects for the 2019-2020 academic year. OpenHawks is a campus-wide grant program that funds faculty efforts to replace current textbooks with OERs for enhanced student success.

University of Iowa graduates to celebrate commencement

More than 4,300 University of Iowa students will receive their degrees at spring 2018 commencement ceremonies, which begin Thursday, May 10, with the College of Pharmacy and end on Friday, May 25, with the College of Dentistry. All other ceremonies will take place May 11–13.

Iowa research shows connection between sleep apnea, deadly blood cancer

University of Iowa researchers have uncovered a link between sleep apnea and multiple myeloma, a rare but aggressive blood cancer. Their findings could improve treatment of the disease.

Deadly scorpion venom reveals pain protein structure

An international team of scientists, including UI biophysicist Chris Ahern, used a lethal scorpion toxin to capture detailed, 3D pictures of a protein involved in pain. The toxin locks the pain protein into a “pose,” allowing researchers to see, for the first time, several unexpected interactions in how protein works.

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine celebrated Match Day on Friday, March 15. A total of 136 students in the college participated in the match through the National Residency Matching Program, and 35 percent of those students will receive their training in Iowa.

When Schools Tell Kids They Can’t Use the Bathroom

Christopher Cooper, a pediatric urologist at the University of Iowa, began researching the issue of school children's bathroom access after noticing a high frequency of urinary tract infections and higher rates of voiding dysfunction among his young patients.
